Location of Ensenada, Baja California. The city of Ensenada with a population of approximately 400,000 inhabitants is located in the northwest corner of Mexico, about 100 km to the south of the United States border. The county of Ensenada is one of the oldest municipalities and the largest in the State of Baja California; the county prides itself by the quality of its agricultural export products. Tourism, fishing, agriculture and various industries are the most important activities in the economic development of the city of Ensenada. One of the extraordinary characteristics of the city is the convergence of academic and cultural institutions and research centers, among them: the Scientific Research and Higher Education Center of Ensenada (CICESE), the Ensenada Campus of the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC), and two branches of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM): the Institute of Astronomy and the Center of Nanosciences and Nanotechnology. All of these are located in close proximity. Other institutions in the city are CETyS University, Xochicalco University, the Technological Institute of Ensenada and the Technological University. Tourist sites They include national parks in nearby mountain ranges, the Juárez Sierra with the Hanson Lagoon, and the San Pedro Martir Sierra. A popular site is a wave-driven blow-hole called La Bufadora located on the hills at the southern end of Ensenada bay. To the north lies the lovely vineyards of the Valley of Guadalupe where wines of world-wide quality are produced. In Ensenada you can also find a great diversity of fauna like the big horn sheep, deer, dolphins, whales, etc. There is a wide variety of flora including pine forests, coastal scrub and numerous desert plants. Geographic Reference. Climate The city of Ensenada has a mild Mediterranean climate. Summers are dry. From December to May sporadic rains total approximately 300 mm. In December mid-day temperatures reach 15-25°C (60-80°F); at night the temperature may drop to 5-15°C (40-60°F). Prevailing winds blow from the Northwest. Occasionally Santa Ana winds blow from the Northeast during the Summer. Emergency Telephones.
